Norwich Bus Station

Newnham Structures were pleased to be instructed by Morgan Ashurst to supply & erect Norwich City’s new flagship Bus Station as part of the city’s ongoing regeneration programme. Designed by NPS architects this award winning £5 million investment opened in mid 2005, and is now at the centre of Norwich & Norfolk bus network.

The distinctive new bus station is an instantly recognizable landmark, with it's canopy spanning 2,200 square meters in size - providing an impressive addition to the city's skyline. At the centre of the larger, ‘plectrum’ shaped canopy, translucent fabric panels have been used to allow natural light to penetrate and reach the main concourse below the 15m span cantilever canopy trusses. The second ‘boomerang’ canopy is separate to the main structure and therefore allows air to circulate between the canopies to help reduce the accumulation of fumes from the buses below.

Newnham Structures were involved from a ‘drawing board’ stage until completion, the boomerang element of the project proved extremely difficult to design / draw due to it’s unusual sweeping design, not generally used in steel construction. Draughtsman Mr Jeremy Grix battled 70 plus hour weeks closely with Mr Michael Spicer (NPS) to provide our workshop with fabrication drawings.

Delivery of some elements of the project was also not straight forward as some of the structural members were in excess of 25 metres, these member were transported on specialist rear wheel turning trailers usually used for moving wind turbine blades.

Erection of some elements – the boomerang and the glazing support steel to the main reception area took place during the night and at weekends to keep the complicated structure on program.
